The Most Deadly Tsunami Ever

2004 Asian Tsunami

This photo was taken in India after the coast was struck by tsunami waves 30 feet high traveling at 500 miles per hour. The giant waves were created when the Indian plate slipped 50 vertical feet along 700 feet of its boundary with the Burma plate. This resulted in a megathrust earthquake with a magnitude of 9.0. This is the fourth largest earthquake since 1900. Over 174,000 people lost their lives, hundreds of thousands more were injured. Millions were left homeless and the survivors must face hazzards like disease, polluted water, lack of sanitation and no health services. What do you think or feel about this devastating natural event? Could it happen in California? Why or why not? Look at this link to help answer the question.

What kind of plate boundary caused this movement? Click here to see what earthquakes are happening right now in California. How do you feel about living near a plate boundary? What would you do in case of an earthquake?
